Bloody Mary's anyone? This week we feature homemade Bloody Mary's from the garden. A great way to end the tomato season!
For the spicy tomato juice you will need:
1. 4 lbs tomatoes
2. 8 oz celary
3. 8 oz onion
4. 2 heads garlic
5. 1 ounce horseradish
6. 3-4 spicy peppers
7. 1 tsp nutmeg
8. 1 tsp paprika
9. 1 tsp cayanne pepper
10. Salt and pepper
11. 1 tbsp olive oil
Mince onions and saute with olive oil over medium heat in a large pot until onions are translucent. Chop tomatoes, celery, and peppers then add pot. Turn heat down to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes stirring often. Remove from heat. Mince garlic and shave horseradish. Add all remaining ingredients to pot and stir well.
Blend together until desired consistency is reached. We like the consistency so that you can drink it through a straw but there are still some chunks.
Of course you can enjoy this just as spicy tomato sauce but sometimes a Bloody Mary is called for. For the vodka we used a local one called: Prairie Organic Vodka.
Pour 1-2 ounces of vodka over ice, fill the rest of the glass with the spicy tomato juice, and garnish with some celery, pearl onions and chorizo. How could Sunday morning be any better?

Looks good. My family is relatively new to the Twin Cities, relocating from Chicago where we had an "urban garden" of our own. I was pointed to your site through our blog (greenroofgrowers.blogspot.com) and find it very interesting. I'd love to hear more about your project. If you can, feel free to shoot me an email. Thanks - Russ.
i'm drooling, dan. next time we visit, please please please make some of these?!
