Our Trees Arrived!!

Wow, despite ordering from several companies almost all our trees arrived over the last couple days.  Our house is full of plants and we have a lot of work ahead of us!

We have pears, apples, peach, necterine, cherrys, cornealian cherrys, pawpaw's, blueberries, winterberries, plumbs, mulberries, kiwis and honeyberries to plant.  It's going to be busy around here!

Wow! You've gone through my entire wish list of trees! I'm anxious to hear how they do in your garden. We're putting off our belgian fence until next spring (we need more time to improve the soil and decide what varieties we want) and will order our trees this winter. We'll definitely be following your efforts to guide or decisions! And I'd still like to stop by to see your garden, but will probably wait until later this summer so I can see those trees in place!

We'll certainly keep everyone posted about how the plants do. Right now it looks like we planted a lot of sticks in the ground. Hopefully in the next couple all the dormant plants will leaf out.

Late summer will probably be an amazing time around our place. Hopefully the Tomato Pergola will be covered by then forming a dense canopy over the patio creating a cave like feeling. We'll see how it goes!

We've definitely got tomatoes on the brain tonight. Can't wait for the first fresh vine piked ripe tomatoes of the season.

Now if it would only warm up enough to plant them...

Hi.
I live in Minneapolis and just found out about your blog and project. It sounds and looks amazing! I bought a house with a small yard a few month ago in NE Minneapolis and am starting to implement my urban gardening visions. I will definitely look to your blog for inspiration.

I haven't read all your posts, so apologies if you've covered this already, but I was wondering if you could tell me where you bought or buy your fruit trees and vines?

Thanks,

Pierre

Pierre,

No worries, we haven't actually gone into detail about where we specifically ordered four trees from. Unfortunately, for espaliering most local places either sell trees that are too large, or have a limited selection. So in the end we decided to order bare-root dormant trees through mail order nurseries. Here's where we ended up ordering trees from:

Miller Nurseries (Currants, PawPaws, Cherries & Blueberries))
Trees of Antiquity (Apples and Nectarine)
One Green World (Apples, Mulberry, Cherry, and Plum)
Raintree Nursery (Apples, Pears, Blueberries and Kiwi's)
Stark Brothers (Apples & Currants)
Maple Valley (Apples on M26 Rootstock)
Nourse (Raspberries and Blackberries)
Jung (Strawberries and Grapes)

Everything has now arrived and overall I was very impressed with the quality from all the places. One Green World had the best packaging by far. The Kiwi's form Raintree are beautiful. Not everything has leafed out yet so we'll see how everything does.

Based on my experience so far I would not hesitate to recommend any of these companies. Deciding which ones comes down to availability of the variates you want.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking forward to getting an apple tree to espalier.
