The Wednesday Weigh-In : Week #11

HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY!

This week our chickens laid 32 eggs bringing the total from 39 lbs to 42.6 lbs.  We opted to transplant the lettuce we were growing indoors into a cold frame outside so we did not to harvest any this week.  We still broke 40 lbs of food!  That means were 2% of the way to our goal and the growing season hasn't even begun yet.

Only 1957.4 lbs to go!

Good work, folks. Have you ever heard of growing potatoes in a (clean) garbage can? I read a little bit about it and apparently you just plant some seed potatoes in the bottom and then fill it up with soil bit by bit as the vines grow upward. At harvest time you just tip the can over and it's potatoes galore. It saves space in your garden and it's easier to harvest.

Hey Andrew,

We've never heard about the garbage can idea before but it sounds like an cool way to grow potatoes. Let us know if you try it and how it works. We have heard about creating a circular cage a couple feet wide using chicken wire and the same layering method. We know some people who grow them in their compost bin too (accidentally and on purpose). We're not growing potatoes this year because we just don't eat all that many of them and we blew the seed budget already. We probably should have thought more seriously about growing potatoes, their pretty hefty and would probably help us reach the Urban Ton much faster than all the lettuce we're growing!
