Spring is Here and Up Comes the Garlic!

Today is officially the first day of spring and it was confirmed by the emergence of our Turban garlics.  We are currently growing 28 different cultivars of garlic.  Those 28 cultivars belong to 9 different groups of garlic.  The Turban group generally is the first up in the spring and the earliest to harvest in summer.  We're down to 2 heads of garlic from last years crop so the early harvest of the Turban garlics will be much anticipated as we'll be out of garlic very shortly.

This picture shows two of our Turban garlic's:  Lotus and Thai Fire.  We also grow a third kind called Placid's.  We peeked under the straw at some of the other cultivars of garlic and many of them are just starting to emerge from the soil but haven't worked their way through the 3 inch cover of straw yet.

We know for many people the emergence of daffodils, crocus's and tulips is the first sign of spring but for us without a doubt its seeing the first leaves of our garlic crop emerging from the ground!
