Building a Tomato Pergola

As we outlined in our planting layout this year we plan to grow our tomatoes up trellises that form a pergola around the center patio in the raised bed garden.  With the weather so nice lately we decided to go ahead and get the trellis system built.

We built the pergola out of a set of twenty 7 foot by 10 inch trellises bolted together.  The pergola was built in sections as pictured above, then connected together to form pictured below.

By building the pergola over the patio we will be able to plant the tomatoes closer together in the garden bed by utilizing the growing space over the patio.  The horizontal trellises at the top of the pergola will be utilized to grow the tomatoes horizontally, over the patio, once the reach 7 feet.  We will plant 24 tomato plants on the pergola trellises.  The back side (left in photo) with the horizontal bars will be used to grow peas and cucumbers.  Right now the pergola looks a little bare and kinda like a cage. Once it is covered in tomato vines however it will be a great place to relax under the shade of the tomato vines while snacking on their tasty fruits!
