The Wednesday Weigh-In : Week #8

This week our chickens laid 34 eggs totaling a weight of 3.9 lbs.  With that addition we're at 30.1 lbs of food so far this year.

We're ready to start harvesting lettuce again so hopefully next week we can add another crop into the mix.

Only 1969.9 lbs to go!

Hmmmm only 5 eggs on average per day...tell your chickens to pick up the pace!

But that made me wonder: What is the weight in feed that you give to your chickens each week? If you were able to source all of your feed from your urban lot, what would be the loss in poundage of food for the year that goes to the chickens?

Good Question John!

We thought of this when we made the challenge. For the first attempt at the Urban Ton we decided inputs would not count but if we can reach 2000 pounds, the next step would be to count inputs.

That said we are still keeping track of the food we buy for the chickens. We purchased three 50 lb bags of organic layer feed just after the new year. Two of the bags filled a feed bin that is still mostly full, and the other bag is unopened. We'll see how long it lasts. Our chickens diet is heavily supplemented with food scraps. Any leftover fruit, veggie, or meat scraps go to the chickens every morning. This significantly reduces the amount of chicken feed they eat and turns our waste into eggs and compost material (chicken poop).

From Spring to Fall the chickens primary source of food does come from our lot where they get to forage for bugs, eat grass, and steal veggies when they get into the garden beds. They still eat a little feed but if I recall one bag of feed lasted all summer and into fall last year.

We are experimenting with growing wheat and quinoa this year which are two grains that could easily go into making chicken feed...
